It has been two whole years since my last blog post 5 Things I've Learned in 5 Years of Business and it has been a wonderful two years of my business. Of course, there are always hurtles and hiccups in running your own business, but I feel like I'm finally starting to get the hang of the natural ebbs and flows of my seasons, and really solidifying many of my courses and offerings. As of this past year, I teach yoga & astrology on average to about 250 kids and adults EVERY WEEK!

It feels incredible to be able to share something that I truly love and that I am able to facilitate an experience of mindfulness, healing, and community. The opportunity I have to serve others is one of my deepest joys and the reason why I keep pursuing this career. Upon reflecting on 7 years in business, I wanted to write this blog post to share with you 7 things I LOVE about my business.

7 Things I LOVE About My Business

I serve a wide range of people. From the very beginning of my journey teaching yoga and astrology, I have taught a wide range of different demographics. My original catch-phrase for my business was "Ages 1 to 101", because I really do work with ALL people. I have taught everyone ranging from toddlers at a Montessori school to senior citizens in retirement homes, preschoolers in Trenton to an all-boys Catholic school in Princeton, kids & adult yoga for a Chinese Sunday School to mindfulness meditation for a Jewish Synagogue, and to the wide range of adults who practice yoga & astrology in yoga studios, gyms, night-schools and even through their work. I don't think there is a demographic I have not worked with yet and certainly not one I wouldn't work with. I believe that as long as you are breathing and alive, you can practice yoga, mindfulness, and astrology and that these practices should be accessible to all people.
I am my own boss. Now this part of my business is one of my favorite parts, BUT it also requires an extreme amount of focus and discipline. Many people desire the autonomy and control of being their own boss, but don't really understand the amount of effort that is needed to always steer the ship. If I just show up for my classes, it is simply not enough to keep my business afloat. So while I can create my own schedule and decide what I want to teach, I am using up most of my free time to do things like update my websites, email clients, create invoices, develop programs, schedule classes, make social media posts and marketing campaigns and doing all of the legal & financial book keeping needed to properly run a business. What I love about being my own boss, is that I have complete ownership of the work I do, both what you can see in the form of classes, content & experiences, but also the work I do on the backend that keeps everything flowing.
I am supported by multiple school communities. I am so blessed to be able to share yoga and astrology, things that I love, to multiple supportive school communities. Especially over the last few years, I feel like the teachers and parents are more appreciative than ever that I am giving their children the opportunity to learn the valuable tools of yoga & mindfulness. With modern technology and parenting culture, children are often showing up to school dysregulated, overstimulated, and exhausted. They crave the time to move the energy, connect, and relax. Even the children are recognizing how good they feel after practicing yoga! I think this general feeling of support and genuine interest has really improved the overall experience for everyone. I have had my fair share of resistant teachers, administrators, parents and children, but I am finding that people are a lot more open minded these days and really do value having the opportunity to tap in and move their body.
I get to be super creative. Okay, this actually might be my favorite thing, but I LOVE how creative I can be with this business. I get these creative bursts of inspiration, and that is how programs like my 4-week introductory astrology course Elements of Astrology and my after-school kids yoga program Yoga Around the World were born! I wouldn't necessarily consider myself an "artist" but definitely a creator. The process of having an idea and then being able to write it down and execute the idea is so thrilling and one of the things that fuels me to keep going. I really hope to inspire my students to be creative in their practice as well! One of the fun things I did with my elementary students is I had them use their bodies to create letter shapes to spell out words. They absolutely loved being able to practice yoga in a creative way and to feel that energy of flow and inspiration!
I get to collaborate with amazing people!
Over the past 7 years, I've been able to collaborate with the most amazing individuals. My brother was my first collaborator, as he helped me launch my first version of my website and has been my go-to photographer and videographer since the start. I've also been blessed to have talented friends who I helped me over the years with my logo, graphics, website design, email campaigns, and so much more! Some of my favorite events I have been part of were in collaboration with other small businesses and entrepreneurs. I am always so honored and inspired to work with such passionate & talented individuals and that we can combine our skills, knowledge, and community to reach more people.
My work heals myself and others. The healing powers of yoga, mindfulness and astrology is the main reason I share these practices with others and made it the main focus & mission of my work and business. There has NEVER been a time where I've taught a class and felt worse afterwards. I am so grateful to be able to participate in the healing of others, as well. Whether that be healing the physical body through movement, healing the mental & emotional body through mindfulness, or healing the spiritual body with radical acceptance and understanding through astrology, these practices are some of the best tools for increasing our self-love, compassion, understanding and acceptance. The world is a wild place and especially now with the internet bringing the chaos of the whole world to our awareness, it can feel particularly unnerving at times. I love that I can to share space and the opportunity to tune out that chaos and really work on gaining a deeper connection within.
My business is everything I love to do! Whenever I meet someone knew and they ask what I do for work, I usually say "I have a business teaching yoga & astrology". They might be curious to know what else I do for fun, but really my work IS my fun. One of my biggest joys is movement, and I love that I get to move my body and exercise for work. I just love that I get to increase my strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination while earning a living. I also love being able to share the more mental & spiritual practices of mindfulness & astrology. I'll often tell people that the astrology branch of my business CapriCora Astrology, is like my passion project, because I have so much excitement for the planets & stars and just love to be able to learn along side my students and clients. I even incorporate some of my other hobbies like hiking and baking into my business events, like through our donation-based Astro Walk & Talks. If I wasn't able to engage with these things as much as I do, I don't think my business would have lasted this long. These practices truly align with me, the deepest and truest part of me, and I'm just so grateful to be able to turn them into a business.
